Here is a rare old piece of Guatemalan jewelry that
dates back to the 1920's or earlier. It is a guardapelo
or hair locket. A hair locket was given to a young lady
by her boyfriend when he went away to work. It would
contain a lock of his hair. The charms hanging off the
locket are the tools that he will provide for her kitcken
when they married. The locket also served as a warning
to other young men that the the lady was spoken for.
This one is made of coin silver and has very fine detail
and workmanship on it. It is in excellent condition.
I added the chain to it, the chain is an old mexican
silver chain. The Guardapelo measures 2 3/4" wide
by 2 1/4" long. The chain is 11 1/2" long.
