These old trays are carved from one piece ot wood,
then many layers of lacquer are applied then the brightly
painted flower designs is added. This is is a finer
quality than you normally see in the bateas. It came
from an estate of a traveler went often to Mexico. I
think it was made in the state of Michoacan, Several
books on Mexican folk art (Great Masters of Mexican
Folk Art, Art of the People, Hands of God) show lacquer
with this type of flower painting. The piece is in excellent
condition, with very, very minor wear rubs, hardly worth
mentioning. The paint colors are bright and the detail
is very eye-pleasing. This tray stands out above others
because of the fine workmanship. No cracks in the wood.
It measures 14 7/8" across.
